Qualifications:  Master's Degree in Orientation and Mobility.;  ACVREP certifiable; Knowledge of sign language a plus. (Proficiency in ASL and other methods of communications utilized by individuals who are deaf-blind is expected as instruction is provided); Some travel required (local when necessary)

 

 

Duties: The mission of the Helen Keller National Center for Deaf-Blind Youths and Adults is to enable each person who is deaf-blind to live and work in his or her community of choice. The Helen Keller National Center is the ONLY center in the United States that provides vocational training exclusively to youth and adults who are deaf-blind. We currently have an exciting career opportunity available to join the Orientation and Mobility Department as a Senior Instructor, Orientation and Mobility. The Senior Instructor, O&M, evaluates travel skills, plans and provides individualized O&M programs to youths and adults who are deaf-blind. Specific duties include:

 

  • Provides instruction in safe and efficient travel skills specifically indoor techniques including sighted guide, self protection, and cane skills on campus to deaf-blind people. Lessons are given both day and evenings and the use of one's personal vehicle in transporting students during lesson's may be required.
  • Evaluates progress of students and submits scheduled written reports.
  • Participates in departmental meetings, scheduled interdepartmental team meetings, student case conferences and general staff meetings.
  • Keeps abreast of and evaluates new trends in teaching methods, mobility techniques and mobility aids. If appropriate, recommends or implements these methods or techniques into student programs and services.
  • Shares responsibility for the equipment and general appearance of the work area.
  • Suggests need for appropriate material and equipment.
  • When assigned by the Orientation and Mobility Supervisor, provides in-service training for staff members and others regarding Orientation and Mobility training for deaf-blind individuals.
  • Accompanies and serves as guide and/or interpreter for students and professional staff members, when assigned. To accomplish this, it may be required to use personal vehicle on occasion.
  • Performs related duties, when necessary, at the discretion of the Orientation and Mobility Supervisor, or the Administration.

 

 

Salary and Benefits:  FT work schedule (35 hours/week).  Fully paid health benefits, including tuition reimbursement.
