Located within the Orientation and Career Center for the Blind (OCCB), the Rehabilitation Instructor will teach students the skills necessary to accomplish their personal and professional goals.
The OCCB Rehabilitation Instructors often collaborate on problem-solving related to client needs and curriculum. Located in Portland, our newest Rehabilitation Instructor will teach progressively challenging skills related to Orientation & Mobility. What You Will Do
The purpose of this position is to provide OCCB students with Orientation & Mobility training that will lead to greater self-sufficiency and employment. The instructor will work with students on a full suite of O&M including orientation skills, pre-cane skills, human guide, self-protection, cane techniques, indoor travel, residential travel, commercial district travel, public transportation, and navigation and orientation technology. The position has an individual caseload and often collaborates with fellow Center instructors. Some highlights of this position include:
- Provide one-on-one O&M training to OCB clients related to orientation, cane travel, navigating routes, safety, and travel technology tools.
- Conduct individual client assessments with written recommendations for Center clients’ O&M needs.
- Obtain quotes for any recommended products that would assist clients. This will involve coordination with Vocational Rehabilitation Counselors (VRC) and vendors, ordering, delivery, and instruction as needed.
- Develop lesson plans for individual training goals.
- Write and retain accurate, detailed client reports for individual client lessons.
- Maintain accurate reporting of lessons, case notes, and assessments in case management system.
- Attend staff meetings and client staffing as scheduled.
- Conduct pre- and post- training assessments to measure client progress.
- Assess students with low vision, demonstrate product solutions, and make purchasing recommendations to the counselor.
