Qualifications

Master’s degree in education or a related field. The preferred field of interest would pertain to Special Education with an emphasis on Blindness and Visual Impairment. South Dakota superintendent endorsement or the ability to become alternatively certified while pursuing full certification

Five or more years of related experience, preferably in an administration or leadership position. Experience or knowledge concerning the educational needs of students with sensory disabilities.

Certification by the state of South Dakota, Department of Education as a Superintendent, K-8, 9-12, or K-12 school administrator. Superintendent Certification is preferred.

Different combinations of education and experience may be acceptable to the hiring authority.

Job Description

The South Dakota Board of Regents is seeking a dynamic leader to serve as Superintendent of the South Dakota School for the Blind and Visually Impaired. This position will be responsible for the overall administration of the school, establish budget priorities and provide leadership and supervision for faculty, outreach consultants and other staff as needed.

The successful candidate will have the background, skills and abilities to provide strategic leadership for education and outreach programs for approximately 200 blind or visually impaired students. The candidate will need the skills to foster open communication with various constituencies including the advisory board, board of regents, faculty, staff, parents, community members, local school districts and the legislature. In addition, the board is seeking a self-starting and forward thinking individual that will work to continually improve the educational quality and experience for the students the school serves.
